Aaron Fotheringham is one of the most inspiring
riders to watch in the Vegas Valley, with a nickname like “Wheels”;
you get an idea of what makes him so intriguing. Doing skatepark
maneuvers in his wheelchair, or Hard Core Sitting, as he has termed
it, is the newest discipline in action sports. With incredible
dedication, skill, finesse, and not letting his disabilities discourage
him, Aaron created this new discipline from his desire to grind,
180°, and yes, even back flip. His new action sport has not
only opened the door for a new facet in progression, but has raised
the bar for all other riders/competitors. If you talk to Aaron
though, he is as content with competing and learning new tricks
as he is with teaching others with disabilities how to master
the necessary skills to be a Hard Core Sitter.

| Personal Accomplishments: |
Getting sponsorship, landing the
180°, and landing his first (possible the first ever)
back flip at Woodward. First wheelchair hand plant. |
| Beginnings: |
Started riding when his brother
Brian suggested that he try to drop in a quarter pipe at
Metro Skate park. Before that, he’d go with Brian
watch him ride BMX from behind the fence, but had never
thought to try it himself in his wheelchair. Once Aaron
dropped in, he was hooked. Some friends of the family got
him his first Colours N’ Motion wheelchair which was
a smoother ride and allowed him to do more tricks. Aaron
would attend the Vegas AmJam Competitions for the free stuff
and to socialize with other riders, but resisted competing.
At the insistence of other skaters, his family, and the
Vegas AmJam coordinator, Joe Wichert, Aaron entered his
first comp in June of 2005 and has proved himself a formidable
competitor since. |
| Goals: |
He’d like to go to the X
Games one day, do the first flair in a wheelchair, the first
1080°, and maybe even a double back flip on the Mega
Ramp He’d also like to have a wheel chair video game
similar to Tony Hawks skateboard video game, titled “Hardcore
Sitting” of course. Aaron would also like to see wheelchairs
as a standard discipline in action sport competitions. |
| What about that Backflip at Woodward: |
“The entire week
was awesome. The best week of my life! I went there wanting
to learn to do a back flip, but after I actually did it,
it took me a minute to realize I’d really landed it.
It wasn’t easy, getting there. I keep going for it
and landing on my back, or landing in the foam pit and almost
suffocating because I was stuck upside down and couldn’t
unhook my buckle on my seat. I’d have to wait ‘til
someone got me out!” |
